John Phillips was born in St Clears, Carmarthenshire, into a farming family. He was educated at Whitland Grammar School and studied at Loughborough College, Swansea Institute of Higher Education and Cardiff University. He taught Design and Technology in Secondary schools before taking early retirement. This presented him with the opportunity to use his leisure time painting and further develop a long held interest in art. This has culminated in several exhibitions of his work to date. His main interest and subjects revolve around the real life and landscapes of his native West Wales. He is a winner of many awards both locally and nationally. being the Amateur Artists of the Year 2008 awarded by the Society for all Artists.

He lives in Pendine Carmarthenshire with his wife Sandra, also an artist and their family.
