I use printmaking, not to produce multiples, but for the distinctive qualities that can be achieved. Each original print, even when taken from the same plate or screen, will differ from the next due to variations in ink application, combining and layering, composition and/or progression of plates.
I combine traditional printmaking techniques withe photomechanical and digital methods researched at the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop and the Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol.
Through a combination of printmaking techniques, I explore the strength and presence contrasted with the ephemeral and disintegration. Works appear abstract, but are usually based on observation of particular arrears in any immediate environment, combined with collected objects and images.
Natural and synthetic shapes, forms and textures are stimulated by the exploration of materials - the physical process of making it is as important as the finished work - scratching, gouging, tearing, melting and pouring. Living, working and engaging with the coast continually influences colour, texture and subject.
Currently I am exploring and recording the synthesis of the man made object into the coastal environment. Isolation and fragmentation are themes throughout. Documenting tiny fragments of the discarded, disintegrating object - in which beauty can be found.
Local geology has been of interest to me and taking a methodical approach - recording, map referencing and testing materials - is the basis of new assemblage work and further print making.
I work in Pembrokeshire as a lecturer in Art and Design.
